Chester Zoo has a mission to prevent extinction. Our expertise in behaviour change helped them to reduce deforestation, one community at at time.

Using the principles of behaviour change and a simple and deliverable project management model, we created a specific, actionable, well researched and effective campaign to create the first sustainable palm oil city in the world, led by Chester Zoo. The aim was to increase demand for sustainable palm oil in order to reduce the impact of deforestation globally.
Our inspiration was protecting the forests of Borneo, along with Chester Zoo’s partners, HUTAN, to promote the benefits of sustainable agriculture and HUTAN’s work to reforest and create an ecosystem where wildlife and food production could work in harmony.
One business at a time.
Co-founded with Chester Zoo’s Conservation Manager; Cat Barton, the Chester Zoo team continues to upscale and support sustainable palm oil communities across the UK and has been recognised globally as a successful example of community based conservation action.
The programme has now been rolled out in nine communities across the UK and Chester Zoo’s engagement with the food service industry and retailers at an international level created a real change in the debate about palm oil in the UK.
